Obituary of John H. Hartley

John Hartley, 79, of North Haledon, NJ on Tuesday, February 16, 2016. John was born in Paterson, NJ and has lived in North Haledon his in entire life. He is the son of the late John and Mary Hartley (nee Faber). He was predeceased by his sister Doris Marie.
John graduated from North Haledon grammar school, Hawthorne High School (Class of 1949) and Rutgers College of Pharmacy (Class of 1953).
As a teenager he was very active in the 4-H Club and was State President in 1950. He was selected to have breakfast with President Truman. He was an accomplished equestrian. He served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1956 as a pharmacist.
He owned and trained standardbred horses for over 40 years with his horse partners, Hank DeVries and Michael Organ. He was a member of the United States Trotting Association and the Standardbred Owners and Breeders Association of NJ. He was a Pharmacist for 56 years.
He first owned Neers Drug Store in Paterson and then worked at Sicomac Pharmacy in Wyckoff, NJ from 1979 to 2010. He was the Pharmacist for the Little Sisters of the Poor in Totowa, NJ from 1956 until 2010 and was still a volunteer there. John was also an avid Rose grower. He was a member of the Rutgers Alumni Association and the NJ Pharmacy Association.
John is survived by a foster brother, Hector Vasquez and two godsons, Michael Grohs and Hector Vasquez, Jr.
John would like to be remembered as a kind, passionate Pharmacist, who loved his patients. He was also a Philanthropist who remained anonymous and helped many underprivileged people attend college.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM at Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Joseph's Home for the Elderly, 140 Shepherd Lane, Totowa, NJ. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 5-8 PM at the Little Sisters of the Poor. Memorial gifts to Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Joseph's Home for the Elderly, 140 Shepherd Lane, Totowa, NJ 07512 or the Eastern Christian Children Retreat would be appreciated.
